I feel like there’s an obsession with pace right now in theater, with things being very fast and very witty and very loud, and I think we’re all so freaked out about theater keeping audiences interested because everybody’s so freaked out about theater becoming irrelevant.

Daybreak

The morning comes in through the window. Grey blue light shines on your face. Only one eye open as you groan at the mornings arrival, wishing it would leave. The morning shaking you awake like your parents when you were younger.

"Just five more minutes" you tell the alarm.

You roll over to me and nestle your head on my chest, right below my shoulder. The built-in pillow every man owns. You cuddle in close, hair, sheets, pillows, arms, and legs intwined as one and you softly kiss my neck three times, starting higher and ending lower.

"Just five more minutes" I tell the alarm.

No such luck.

You sit up in bed and smile back at me with your hair lazily covering the left half of your face, with perfect morning bed-head you would only see in movies. You gaze at me as I take all of you in. Your shoulder exposed out of your thin sweater, you chest embracing its last moments of morning freedom before being strapped away for the day, and of course only you could make baggy flannel mens pajama pants look like they were made just for you.

Then the morning rush kicks in. Shedding our sleepy shells, we put on our more awake faces. You change your clothes, gather your things, and I walk with you outside.

"It’s cold outside" you tiredly exclaim as we reach the grey blue October morning sky, now peppered with streaks of orange as if the sun wanted to rise sooner, but decided against it.

"It’s morning outside" I casually correct you with a slight smirk. You look back at me, hit me lightly in the arm with the back of your hand, and smile at me letting me know my stupid, boyish wit wasn’t lost on you.

"Just give them five more minutes" the sun said.

I walk you to your car and we stop and exchange a look. Your beautiful blue eyes looking back at my groggy pre-coffee greens, and you go in for a kiss.

Good morning. Thanks for having me. I’m sorry. I had a great time. I’ll miss you. I think is what your kiss said, and then we say our goodbyes after a perfectly formed embrace.

Just one more kiss.

You get in your car and drive away. I walk back to my building and up the three flights of stairs to my apartment, get out my key and unlock my door.

I’m sorry.

I open my door and go back to my room and I stop in the door frame and look at my bed, and take in the extreme absence of where you were laying next to me. No more than five minutes ago.

I’m sorry.

I lay back down and try to go back to sleep, but the scent of your hair, your perfume, your being, are imprinted on my pillow and the fragrance surrounds me and my thoughts.

I remembered about last night.

You asked me

"What’s on your mind?

I hesitated with my answer, searching for the right words.

"You. I’ve fallen for you. Like, head over heels. I’ve been afraid to say it, but I’d like this - us - to last. The only problem is I don’t know how you feel."

You look back at me silently through the dark of the night, I can feel you taking me in. You kiss me on the lips like they’re the only two you could ever want, then with a hand on my cheek you said

"I’m sorry."

You know your friends knows you well when she asks “do you want anything from the store?” And you say “just a seltzer would be cool” and she not only gets you a seltzer but your favorite Vermont beer just because. Cheers Addie!
